We all know how to read the food labels. But there are some ingredients that deserve your second look.
How many times have you noticed an ingredient with a huge scientific name? According to holistic nutritionist Danielle Felip, some of these ingredients, like sugar and salt, can be dangerous in the long run.
The worst ingredients are, of course, too much sugar (attention to juices!), Trans fats, MSG … often found in ready-made food or fast food and sometimes causing migraines, palpitations, Allergies, etc.
In Canada, it is mandatory to include all ingredients on food packaging. When you read a label, always make sure you know all the ingredients in the list. According to Health Canada, some such as saturated and trans fats, sodium and sugar, may appear under different names.

#1 – Artificial Colours
Sugars hidden in artificial colours would cause hyperactivity and headaches.
#2 – Bleached flour
It is found in most white breads have few nutrients.
#3 – High Fructose Corn Syrup
This ingredient is found in most ready-made dishes, including sliced meats and hams. Not only does it have no nutritional value, it is directly related to the risks of type 2 diabetes.
#4 – Artificial sweeteners
You can be addicted to it like sugar. These are chemicals that can cause especially migraines.
#5 – Butylated Hydroxytoluene or BHT
BHT is used in most dishes ready to preserve fat. This is a chemical ingredient that could cause allergic reactions on the skin.
#6 – The Partially Hydrogenated Oil
Found in cake mixes, peanut butter, etc., it is related to heart disease.
#7 – MSG or Glutamate Additive-Monosodium
MSG is mainly found in restaurant food. Some people are allergic to it, and there are suspicions of other reactions.
#8 – Sodium nitrate
Sodium nitrate and sodium nitrite are chemical components used in meats and sausages (bacon, hot dogs, etc.). They would cause an increased risk of diabetes and colon cancer.
#9 – Sodium benzoate
Sodium benzoate is a chemical preservative used to prevent the proliferation of bacteria in certain foods such as jam, fruit tarts and sweetened beverages.
#10 – The sulphites
The sulphites retain the original colour of the food and prolong their life. They are found in fruit preserves, frozen French fries and many soy foods. They are linked to large allergic reactions.
